Grade selection
304 and 304L are austenitic 18/8 stainless steel grades used for general fabrication, food equipment, architectural panels, tanks, covers, enclosures and industrial sheet metal parts. The main selection question is carbon content and welding exposure, not a difference in product form.
304 stainless steel sheet is suitable for many non-welded or lightly welded applications where the environment is not chloride-heavy and the section thickness is moderate. 304L is the low-carbon version and is usually preferred for welded assemblies, thicker sections or projects where the buyer wants lower intergranular corrosion risk after welding.
If the application involves marine atmosphere, repeated chloride cleaning or aggressive chemical exposure, the buyer should review 316/316L stainless steel sheet instead of forcing 304 into a service condition where it may not be the right grade.
| Element | 304 | 304L | Buyer note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | 0.08% max | 0.03% max | Main difference between 304 and 304L |
| Chromium | 18.0-20.0% | 18.0-20.0% | Supports corrosion resistance in normal service environments |
| Nickel | 8.0-10.5% | 8.0-12.0% | Supports austenitic structure and formability |
| Manganese | 2.00% max | 2.00% max | Confirm on MTC |
| Silicon | 0.75% max | 0.75% max | Confirm on MTC |
Choose 304L when the project involves welded tanks, food processing equipment, thicker fabricated sections, process vessels, brackets or panels where post-weld heat treatment is not planned. Choose 304 when the application is mostly formed, cut, bent or assembled without significant welding and the commercial priority is a standard 304 stainless steel sheet metal specification.
Turkey supply route
Turkey can be practical when the buyer needs stainless flat products, documented mill supply, export packing and one RFQ process for sheet, plate, coil or slit coil.
SteelFromTurkey supports stainless steel sheet supplier Turkey and stainless steel exporter Turkey requirements with a direct supplier/exporter workflow. We review the specification, check suitable Turkish mill or service-center routes, confirm certificate and packing expectations, then prepare a project-specific quotation.

304 stainless steel sheet price depends on nickel market movement, grade, thickness, finish, order quantity, certificate type, packing, Incoterm and destination. Turkish mill routes may be positioned below Western European supply for equivalent project specifications, but the actual gap is confirmed quotation by quotation.
Delivery terms can include EXW, FOB Turkish ports such as Gemlik, Iskenderun, Mersin or Izmir, CIF destination port or DAP. Typical transit is confirmed at order stage based on availability, processing, inspection, packing and freight route.
RFQs can be supported with EN 10204 3.1 MTC review, optional 3.2 certification, PMI, dimensional inspection, surface inspection, certificate of origin and packing list checks. Third-party inspection by organizations such as SGS, Bureau Veritas or TUV can be reviewed when the buyer includes it in the RFQ.
Dimensions
Stainless steel sheet thickness and dimensions should be stated clearly in the RFQ. Buyers often ask for 4x8 sheet, which usually refers to 1219 x 2438 mm, while metric projects may require 1000 x 2000 mm, 1250 x 2500 mm, 1500 x 3000 mm or cut-to-length formats.
SteelFromTurkey can review RFQs for sheet, cut-to-length sheet, 304 stainless steel plate, stainless steel sheet coil, slit coil and strip. Coil is useful for service centers, stamping, roll forming and repeat cutting programs.
| Product form | Thickness | Width | Length / supply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cold rolled sheet | 0.3-6.0 mm typical RFQ range | 1000-1500 mm | 2000, 2438, 2500, 3000 mm or cut-to-length |
| Hot rolled sheet | 3.0-12.0 mm typical RFQ range | 1000-2000 mm | 2000-6000 mm or cut-to-length |
| Plate | 12-80 mm by RFQ | 1500-2000 mm | Project length, mill route confirmed |
| Coil / slit coil | Confirm by grade and finish | Parent or slit width | Coil weight and ID by RFQ |
ASTM A480/A480M is commonly used for general flat-rolled stainless requirements, including thickness tolerances and finish conditions. EN 10029 may appear on plate specifications. If the final part needs tight flatness, visible-surface protection or repeat blank accuracy, include tolerance and flatness requirements before pricing.
Surface finish
Finish selection affects appearance, cleanability, handling, fabrication risk and packing. A cold rolled stainless steel sheet with 2B finish is not equivalent to a brushed visible panel, even when the grade and thickness are the same.

| Finish | Description | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 2B | Smooth cold rolled finish | General fabrication, food equipment, tanks and enclosures |
| BA | Bright annealed reflective finish | Decorative surfaces, cleanable panels and appliance-like parts |
| No.4 brushed | Directional satin finish | Kitchen equipment, elevator panels and architectural cladding |
| Hairline | Fine linear decorative finish | Interior panels and visible trim |
| No.8 mirror | Highly polished reflective finish | Decorative and architectural surfaces, with film and careful packing |
| No.1 | Hot rolled, annealed and pickled finish | Heavier sheet or plate where industrial performance matters more than visible appearance |
Standards
304/304L sheet can be supplied against US, European or Japanese stainless flat product specifications depending on buyer requirement. The RFQ should state the controlling standard, grade designation and certificate type.
ASTM A240/A240M covers chromium and chromium-nickel stainless steel plate, sheet and strip for pressure vessel and general applications. EN 10088-2 is common for European stainless flat product requirements, where 304 corresponds to EN 1.4301 and 304L corresponds to EN 1.4307.
| Common name | UNS | EN number | EN name |
|---|---|---|---|
| AISI 304 | S30400 | 1.4301 | X5CrNi18-10 |
| AISI 304L | S30403 | 1.4307 | X2CrNi18-9 |
| Document or check | RFQ use |
|---|---|
| EN 10204 MTC 3.1 | Standard heat-level chemical, mechanical and traceability document when requested |
| EN 10204 MTC 3.2 | Third-party witnessed inspection document when the project requires it |
| PMI | Positive material identification for grade confirmation |
| Certificate of origin and packing list | Export document package by shipment scope |
Application fit
304 stainless steel sheet metal is selected when austenitic formability, clean surface condition and general corrosion resistance are needed. The service environment still matters; for chloride-heavy or marine exposure, 316/316L may be the better grade.
304/304L sheet is used for work tables, sinks, hoods, cabinets, trays, covers, tanks and food processing equipment. Finish and cleaning practice should be matched to the contact condition and hygiene requirement.
Architectural buyers use 304 sheet for elevator panels, interior cladding, handrails, decorative trim, facade details and visible panels. No.4, hairline, BA or mirror finish should be quoted with protective film and packing requirements.
304L is often reviewed for welded tanks, covers, trays and fabricated process equipment in mild service environments. OEM and transport buyers may request brackets, covers, trim, exhaust-related parts and formed sheet components with repeat tolerance and inspection plans.
