Steel traceability at a glance
Traceability does not mean every item automatically has lifetime piece-level tracking. The purchase order must define whether heat-, coil-, batch- or individual-piece traceability is required.
Buyer action: state the required traceability level, marking method, inspection document and record-retention requirement before quotation. Include the heat number, coil or plate number and resulting bundle or child-coil identity in the acceptance checklist.

Material identity
Connect heat, coil, processing and shipment records
Material identification shows that the correct grade and size are being used. Traceability goes further: it connects a specific steel item to the records that demonstrate what it is.
The order should define material identity; the mill assigns production identifiers; markings and documents remain connected; processing creates a parent-to-child record; and the final shipment review reconciles labels, processing records, MTC, packing list and order quantity.

Risk control
Where flat-steel traceability commonly breaks
For processed material, verify the parent-to-child conversion record. Reconcile coil or bundle weights and counts with the packing list, then record exceptions before cargo release.

Choose the inspection document before production
EN 10204 defines inspection-document types for metallic products. An MTC supports traceability only when its identifiers and scope match the physical material and order.

Receiving control
Verify the physical material, certificate and shipment as one chain
Resolve mismatches before cargo release. Digital records strengthen control, but the delivered material still needs a durable identifier that connects it to the approved record set.

What to include in a traceability-ready RFQ
State product form; standard, grade and edition; dimensions, tolerances, surface and edge condition; quantity and shipment split; inspection-document type; heat-, coil-, lot-, bundle- or piece-level requirement; marking method; parent-to-child records after processing; third-party inspection; packing, destination and Incoterm.

Steel traceability questions
Is a heat number the same as a coil number?
No. A heat number identifies the steelmaking melt, while a coil number identifies a specific rolled coil. A traceability record may need both.
Does an EN 10204 3.1 certificate prove that the delivered coil is correct?
It provides specific inspection results, but identifiers, grade, dimensions and test scope still need to be matched to the physical coil and order.
How is traceability maintained after coil slitting?
The processor assigns child-coil identifiers and records their connection to the master coil, heat number and inspection document.
Is full traceability mandatory for every steel order?
No. The applicable standard, project specification and purchase contract determine the required level.
