What a coil certificate should prove
Terms such as coil certificate, mill certificate, MTC and MTR are often used loosely. The purchase order should name the required document type and evidence rather than relying on a generic label.

Documents that may be called a coil certificate
Environmental or emissions documents support separate reporting requirements; they are not material mechanical-compliance evidence.

EN 10204 types for steel coil
EN 10204 defines inspection-document types for metallic products.
The required type must be agreed before production. It is not safe to assume that a certificate of conformity equals a 3.1 MTC.

Receiving control
How to read and verify a coil MTC
Start with the purchase order. Confirm issuer and document type; match heat and coil identity; check standard, grade and delivery condition; review required results; reconcile dimensions and quantity; and record deviations before acceptance.
For HRC, CRC and stainless coils, the applicable standard and order determine the expected chemistry, mechanical properties, surface or coating checks, dimensions, tolerances and supplementary tests. Review the product page for the technical purchasing scope before requesting the certificate package.

The expected certificate fields change with the coil family
Red flags include unreadable or altered documents, inconsistent units, missing validation, certificate values outside the ordered grade range, and a physical label that cannot be linked to the stated heat and coil.

Preserve certification after slitting and cutting
Red flags include altered or unreadable certificates, missing heat or coil links, inconsistent units, an MTC for the wrong order line, missing validation, or a generic certificate that does not state the ordered product evidence.

FAQ
Steel coil certification questions
Is an MTC the same as a certificate of origin?
No. An MTC reports material identity and inspection results; a certificate of origin is a trade document.
What certificate is usually requested for hot-rolled coil?
The purchase order should state the required document type, commonly an EN 10204 type where applicable, plus any project-specific evidence.
Can a service center issue a new mill certificate after slitting?
It can issue processing and traceability records, but the relationship to the original mill MTC and master coil must remain clear.
Does EN 10204 3.2 mean every test is repeated independently?
No. It defines a validation route. The exact inspection activities follow the governing standard and purchase order.
